OPEN finance expert Mike Periu on changes in the I-9 verification form.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have proposed making changes to the Employment Eligibility Verification or I-9 Form. The changes to the I-9 form include expanded instructions and a cleaner distinction between which parts of the form must be completed by employers and which part must be filled out by employees. There have been complaints that the current version of the form is confusing and many good-faith mistakes have been made in filling it out. Given the penalties associated with failing to fill out the I-9 form accurately, the National Restaurant Association has requested further clarification on both format and instructions.
